Walk To Honor Memory Of Ricky Byrdsong 16 Years After His Murder
(CBS) -- Sunday marks an annual event called Race Against Hate in memory of Ricky Byrdsong.
The Northwestern basketball coach was one of the victims in a neo-Nazi shooting spree in Illinois in 1999.
16 years later, the Evanston-North Shore YWCA oversees the run and walk which includes a 5k and 10k.
Byrdsong's widow says in light of what's happened in Charleston this year's race has taken on a whole new meaning.
"I think what happened in Charleston this week is a reminder of how important the Race Against Hate is and everything that it symbolizes and it reminds us that we do have a problem with hate in our country," said Sherialyn Byrdsong.
It's not late to sign-up. You can do so at the event Sunday morning at 7:30. Proceeds from the race go toward racial equality programs.
