A coalition of construction groups and natural gas companies are taking the Village of Oak Park, Illinois, to court over the west Chicago suburb's ban on natural gas.

In 2023, Oak Park passed the Electrification Ordinance, which outlawed the use of natural gas in all newly built homes and buildings.

It is part of the town's goal to get to zero emissions by 2050.

A lawsuit filed by the Clean Energy Choice Coalition, the National Association of Homebuilders, NPL Construction Co., and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 claim the policy violates federal law and takes away consumer choice.

CBS News Chicago reached out to the Village of Oak Park for comment. There had been no response late Tuesday.
