1 dead, 6 hurt in Chick-fil-A shooting in Union Township, N.J., investigators say
A mass shooting at a Chick-fil-A in Union Township, New Jersey, left one person dead and six others wounded, and no arrests have been made, according to officials.
The Union County Prosecutor's Office said police responded to the restaurant on Route 22 near Gelb Avenue after getting reports of shots fired at around 9 p.m. Saturday.
Officers found seven victims at the fast food restaurant, including one person who was soon pronounced dead, the prosecutor's office said in an update Sunday.
Six victims were treated for non-life-threating injuries amid the large emergency response late Saturday night, they said.
Shooting was not random, officials say
"I got an unconscious witness. I've got one shot in the face ... and I have at least two in the leg," a 911 dispatcher says in audio obtained by CBS News New York.
New witness video shows someone in a mask sprinting away with a handgun. Several other people are then seen leaving the parking lot.
Another angle shows one of the victims conscious and on a stretcher near an ambulance surrounded by EMTs.
Officials said the preliminary investigation determined the shooting was not random and there was no ongoing threat to the general public.
"This is an active and ongoing investigation," the prosecutor's office said, adding a $10,000 reward has been offered for tips leading to an arrest.
"It was craziness"
After the shooting, a man told CBS News New York his girlfriend works at the Union Township Chick-fil-A and that she said a group of men entered the restaurant and went directly behind the counter, firing multiple shots.
Another family member told CBS News New York that their loved one witnessed some kind of altercation between the gunmen.
On Sunday, a man who was working at Botera Cannabis across the street at the time of the shooting described the chaos.
"Last night, around 8:20 p.m., 8:25 p.m., there was a lot of commotion on 22, a lot of people running in all sorts of different directions. When I came in this morning to review some of the footage, it was craziness," Ben Wegner said.
Lay Ben was working at the Wingstop across the road.
"One of the people that was hurt, the ambulance assisted them over here. That's all we know," Ben said. "I just know that they were hurt in the leg and the cops were assisting them."
In what is a busy shopping area, where many young people work, the tragedy feels personal.
"It could have been us. It's me, working here, as me being somebody at Wingstop and I'm at the front. It could have been me," Ben said.
"Report any info to local law enforcement," Gov. Sherrill says
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said she was briefed on the shooting and that "New Jersey stands with the Union Township community."
"We now know that last night's shooting in Union Township tragically claimed one life and left six others injured. Our hearts go out to the victim's loved ones, and we are hoping for the full recovery of those who were injured," Sherrill said.
The governor encouraged the community to "remain vigilant and report any information to local law enforcement."
Union Township Mayor Patricia Guerra-Frazier released a statement that said, in part, "This tragedy is a painful reminder of the work that remains to ensure the safety of our communities. Violence has no place in the Township of Union, and we will continue to stand together -- stronger and more united -- in the face of it.
"We will provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, we ask for patience, compassion, and support for one another as we begin to heal," she added.
The prosecutor's office urged anyone with information to contact the Union County Police Department as the investigation continues. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling 908-654-TIPS (8477) or online at uctip.org, they said.
