Nobody witnessed the vertical drill bit going into the worker's lower back. They just heard screaming and saw him there after it happened and they called 911.
"We are not sure how or why he was in the area of the machine," McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Joe Krueger told the Sun-Times Media Wire.
Firefighters disconnected the drill bit from the machine and left it where they found it.
The man was alert, talking and stable when he was airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where doctors gingerly took the bit out of the man's back.
