The 90-year-old died last Sunday from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Minoso was a nine-time All Star who played Major League Baseball in five different decades and broke huge barriers including becoming the first black player in Chicago, and one of the first Latin American players in pro ball.
Pierce described Minoso as a "true Hall of Famer" who never refused an autograph. He said Minnie, "…loved the game, he was proud of his heritage and proud that he was a major league baseball player playing for the Chicago White Sox."
Minnie's son Charlie Rice-Minoso described him as quirky and unconventional and said he was, "…the most generous man with the most infectious smile."
After the service, more than more than 100 cars participated in a memorial procession past U.S. Cellular Field, and the site of the old Comiskey Park.
