Republicans Take Turn In Battle Over Budget, Reform

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Lawmakers are expected to take up legislation that tackles central planks of Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner's pro-business priorities.

Proposals addressing workers compensation, changes to the civil legal system and a freeze on property taxes are on the agenda Wednesday in Senate committees.

These are the first pieces of legislation to come up for public debate since they were filed earlier this week in the House and Senate. The package of bills reflects a scaled-back version of the Republican governor's "turnaround agenda."

They also come as Democrats advance a stack of budget bills outlining a $36.3 billion spending plan for next year that Republicans have entirely opposed.

Rauner wants his package of legislation approved before he'll consider signing a new budget.
