Red Cross Volunteers To Discuss Fire Safety In Roseland
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The American Red Cross is making home visits in the Roseland neighborhood Friday and Saturday, talking to homeowners about fire prevention.
"Unfortunately, Roseland has a significant number of home fires each year," said Red Cross community programs director Yvette Alexander-Maxie.
Volunteers Preach Fire Safety In Roseland
WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports Alexander-Maxie is leading the agency's Team Firestopper – a group volunteers who will take smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers to area residents; and talk to them about fire safety and disaster plans.
"Our chief goal here is to provide information to residents of how they could be safer from home fires," she said. "We're really looking for an opportunity to sit down with them, and share this information with them on how they could be safer within their home."
In one visit on Friday, homeowner Tonya Howard already was prepared, her home equipped with three smoke detectors and two carbon monoxide detectors.
"I'm a foster parent, so it's mandatory," she said. "We have to do an evaluation, and then we have to have a plan, too."
Anyone interested in participating in the Team Firestopper program can find out when volunteers will bei in their community, or complete an application at the Red Cross website.
