Police Chase, Shoot Teen Suspect In Evanston

EVANSTON, Ill. (STMW) - Police in north suburban Evanston shot a teenage boy suspected of firing shots at a passing vehicle after he allegedly refused to follow police orders during foot pursuit.

Officers on routine patrol were traveling north on Dodge Avenue when they saw a 17-year-old boy firing a handgun at 1715 Dodge Ave. at 8:14 p.m., according to a statement from Evanston police Chief Richard Eddington.

The gunman was apparently shooting at a vehicle traveling west in an alley in the 1900 block of Church Street, Eddington said.

Before the officers could exit, the patrol vehicle slid on ice and hit a fixed object, Eddington said. Neither officer was hurt, and both exited the vehicle after the crash and chased the gunman on foot.

The officers pursued the teen north in an alley east of the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue, Eddington said. The suspect "refused to comply with their demands" and one of the officers discharged his service pistol and shot him in his left shoulder.

The teen was taken to North Shore University Health System in Evanston, where he was listed in "stable" condition, police said.

The handgun apparently used in the shooting was recovered at the scene, Eddington said.

Evanston police protocol requires the Illinois State Police Integrity Task Force to investigate.

State Police District Chicago Sgt. Timothy Taylor said the task force was called about 9 p.m. Friday. State Police crime scene investigators also responded to the shooting.
