Padres Shut Out Cubs 2-0

SAN DIEGO (CBS) -- The Cubs had a late-night date with the San Diego Padres on the West Coast Monday night, and the highly-touted Brett Jackson had a rough night as the Padres shut out the Cubs 2-0.

Jackson, who got two hits in his major league debut Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, struck out four times. Vitters, who also made his debut Sunday as a pinch hitter, was 0 for 4, including a groundout to end the sixth inning with runners at second and third.

And Travis Wood pitched well for the Cubs, but he wasn't as sharp as Eric Stults and the Padres' bullpen.

Stults (2-2) allowed five hits as he pitched 5 1-3 innings in his first start since June 3. He struck out five, walked two and had a wild pitch.

Wood (4-8) allowed two runs and five hits over six innings, extending his career-worst losing streak to five games. The lefty struck out three, walked three and threw a wild pitch.

"(Wood) pitched a real good game," Sveum said. "It could have been one run. He did a good job but we've got to manufacture a few runs."

The Cubs were not able to take advantage of the few scoring chances they had, going 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position and stranding seven runners overall. And Yonder Alonso and Everth Cabrera each drove in a run for the Padres, and that was all they needed.

It was the Cubs' sixth straight loss.

"It's tough, but losing is always tough," Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney said. "But you have to look at what we're developing. We're trying to sort out the pieces and see what we are going to look like in the future."
