OnStar: Chicagoans Made Almost 2,000 Good Samaritan Calls Last Year

CHICAGO (CBS) -- This is Good Samaritan Day, and the OnStar motorist helpline has put out a list of cities it says had the most Good Samaritan calls in 2011.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, Chicago, the third most populous city and metro area, had the second highest number of calls to OnStar. They totaled almost 2,000.

OnStar spokeswoman Cathy McCormick recalled one of the most dramatic Good Samaritan calls.

"We had an On-Star subscriber who actually stopped to pick up a woman who had been shot by her husband, and was able to get her safely into his vehicle," she said.

But McCormick said most Good Samaritan calls were of the variety you would suspect – people calling to report accidents, or the need for an ambulance for another motorist having a health emergency.

Chicago was outranked only by Houston in Good Samaritan calls last year, according to OnStar, a subsidiary of General Motors.
