Officers Shoot Suspect When He Points Gun At Them, Police Say

(STMW) -- Chicago Police officers shot a man after he pointed a gun at them Saturday afternoon in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

About 4:15 p.m., gang enforcement officers on patrol in the 6100 block of South Rockwell approached the 34-year-old man for a narcotics investigation, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

As an officer walked up and announced himself, the man turned and pointed a handgun at him, police said.

The man then ran away and eventually ran into two more officers. He again pointed his gun at the officers and they subsequently shot him in both legs, police said.

He was taken to a hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, is investigating, spokesman Larry Merritt said.
