Northwestern Students Protest Roommate Limits
Updated 1/26/11 8:04 p.m.
EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS/WBBM) -- The City of Evanston says nothing has changed, but apparently has decided not to step up enforcement of a law that limits unrelated roommates.
As WBBM Newsradio 780's Bob Roberts reports, Northwestern president Morton Shapiro sat down with Evanston city officials one day after a sometimes-raucous public meeting on the ordinance, which set a limit of three unrelated students per dwelling.

Each side issued a statement afterward. The City of Evanston says it has not changed enforcement and has no plan to do so, despite comments 24 hours earlier that enforcement would be stepped up July 1. The city also says it will not seek evictions.
City officials say there has been an increase in complaints about violations of the ordinance.
Evanston residents say they're fed up with the noise and excess garbage generated by apartments and homes packed with students.
But students say the ordinance threatens their sense of community.
In a statement by Northwestern, dean of students Burgwell Howard said the university is taking steps to address complaints, but says targeting students selectively would be a disservice.
