No Deal

Kenny Williams walked out of his "War Room" about 30 minutes before the trading deadline because he knew he wouldn't complete any trades. After making one deal and closing on another only to have that one called off, Williams tried to add to his ballclub but to no avail. Adam Dunn, Prince Fielder and Manny Ramirez were all discussed but in the end the asking price was too much for William's tastes.

The Sox GM said all discussions came to a halt when Gordon Beckham's name was brought up. He didn't call Beckham an untouchable but said he wasn't going for any of the above named players. He also said that Dayan Viciedo's name wasn't brought up but if it would have been those talks would have ended too. Williams said he did complete a deal with Houston for Lance Berkman but Berkman nixed it with his 10 & 5 veto power. Williams also admitted he talked with the Dodgers regarding Manny Ramirez but they weren't interested, at this time. That's not to say that Williams can't revisit the Ramirez conversation as he surely will clear waivers.

Williams said the acquisition of Edwin Jackson might be considered a "subtle" move by some but "subtle" moves enabled the Sox to get in the playoffs in 2005 and 2008. Williams was clearly exhausted after burning the candle the last few days and said he's going home to watch Saturday's game on TV. He was (pun intended) going to phone it in.
