MLB Amateur Draft Day 2: Cubs Take Prep Lefty Bryan Hudson In Round 3

(CBS) With their third-round pick and at No. 82 overall in the MLB amateur draft on Tuesday, the Cubs selected 18-year-old left-hander Bryan Hudson out of Alton High School in Illinois.

Hudson is a towering hurler, standing 6-foot-8 and 220 pounds. His curveball is his best pitch, according to feedback from scouts, and his fastball sits in the 86-90 mph range. He's viewed as a player with lofty potential if he can develop more velocity as he ages. Hudson hasn't worked yet much on his change-up, according to his MLB.com scouting report.

Hudson was 10-2 with a 0.50 ERA and 152 strikeouts in 70 1/3 innings as a senior.

The Cubs took outfielders with their first- and second-round picks Monday. In 2014, the Cubs took position players with two of their first three picks, then took pitchers with their next nine picks.

Below are some highlights of Hudson.

The third through 10th rounds of the draft are being held Tuesday, while rounds 11-40 will be conducted Wednesday.
