(CBS) -- In the wake of the presidential election, Mexico's consul general in Chicago says Mexico will continue working "respectfully with all U.S. authorities."
But he says his office will be on the lookout for anything that could harm "the integrity of Mexicans."
President-Elect Trump has threatened to build a wall, deport millions of Mexicans and renegotiate NAFTA.
The word from the consul general in Chicago, Carlos Jimenez Macias, is one of guarded peace.
"The Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago will pay close attention to any expression that could endanger or harm the integrity of Mexicans," he told reporters Thursday.
And Jimenez says the consulate will respond "with all the legal and diplomatic tools available to any incident that could threaten their rights and dignity."
Jimenez also advised Mexicans and Mexican Americans in the Chicago area to "know their rights" and not be victims of immigration fraud and deception.
