Man Who Fatally Beat Baby Son For Crying Sentenced To 45 Years
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A west suburban man was sentenced to 45 years in prison Thursday for the death of his infant son, whom he beat to death when the baby would not stop crying in 2009.
Judge Kathryn Creswell sentenced Gustavo Torres-Medel, 27, formerly of West Chicago, to 45 years the murder of 3 1/2-month-old Gustavo Torres-Medel Jr. Judge Creswell had found Torres-Medel guilty on June 10 after a three-day-long bench trial, according to a release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.
On the morning of April 27, 2009, Torres-Medel beat his son about the head and body when the infant began crying and would not drink from his bottle, prosecutors allege. He also grabbed his son under his arms, squeezed and shook him, then threw him into a child carrier, the release said.
Torres-Medel was arrested and charged the next day.
"On April 27, 2009, three-and-one-half month old Gustavo Torres-Medel Jr.'s life was violently taken from him because he would not stop crying," State's Atty. Robert Berlin said in the release. "All cases involving child abuse are disturbing, but this case is particularly heartbreaking because Gustavo Torres-Medel, Jr.'s life was taken from him by his own father."
Torres-Medel will be required to serve 100 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
