Man Says He Kidnapped Baby By Accident

CHICAGO (CBS) - Police say a man told them he kidnapped his girlfriend's 2-month old son by accident at an East Garfield Park neighborhood gas station this week.

At 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, a woman called for help and told police her boyfriend kidnapped her 2-month-old son following an argument between her and the man at a Citgo gas station at 2959 W. Fulton St., according to Wood District police.

Police immediately put out an alert in the district and soon found the vehicle that the 20-year-old boyfriend took off in with the child. The vehicle was unattended a few blocks away from the gas station and the child was initially nowhere to be found, police said.

The grandparents of the man turned the baby over to police after the man fled, police said.

The man was eventually arrested nearby by district officers.

He is not the baby's father, although he does have a different child with the same girlfriend.

Both the baby and the man were taken to Harrison Area headquarters at 3151 W. Harrison St., where charges are pending for the man and the baby was checked out, police said. The baby was not hurt in the kidnapping.

The man said he took off after the heated argument but did not intentionally kidnap the baby, police said.

The baby has since been returned to his mom, who is in her mid-30s, police said.
