Man Guilty In Savage Beating Of Wife In 2010
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 33-year-old Southwest Side man has been found guilty of beating his wife with a club and brass knuckles in a grisly 2010 attack that led to the woman's death three weeks later.
A Cook County jury late Monday convicted Luis Viramontes, 33, of the murder of Sandra Rincon-Viramontes, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's office.
Rincon-Viramontes, then 30, was attacked by her husband in their home on Jan. 10, 2010, in what prosecutors called a "savage beating in which she sustained bruising to her entire body and massive head injuries."
Police at the time said she was beaten about the head, face and body with a club and brass knuckles.
Viramontes and his wife got into an argument after returning home from a dinner at which he accused her of having an affair, according to prosecutors. The couple had two young children, 6 and 2 at the time.
He did not seek medical attention for battered wife, waiting several hours to tell a relative about her injuries, prosecutors said. The relative called 911 the next morning paramedics found her unconscious in the home in the home in the 5700 Block of South Rutherford.
Viramontes was arrested and originally charged with aggravated domestic battery and attempted murder, police said.
Rincon-Viramontes remained in a coma until died three weeks later on Jan. 31, and the charges were upgraded.
During the trial, Viramonets admitted hitting his wife, but denied beating her, according to prosecutors.
The jury began deliberations Monday afternoon and returned its guilty verdict late Monday evening. Viramontes will face up to 60 years in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 19, according to prosecutors.
