Man Dead After Being Found Shot In Minivan In Auburn Gresham; Attempted Carjacking Suspected

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was found slumped over in a minivan after getting shot in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood Thursday evening, and later died.

As CBS 2's Jermont Terry reported, officers from the Gresham District found the man in the minivan around 7:05 p.m. in the 8500 block of South Parnell Avenue.

The man was bleeding badly at the time, but still alert. The van had come to a stop on the sidewalk.

But after being rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, the man was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the man was either driving or parked when someone tried to carjack his Mercedes minivan.

It was not clear whether the victim had time to react or did not follow the shooter's orders. But at least one shot went off hitting the victim.

The person who reported the shooting said he knew the victim and told police it was an attempted carjacking.

But by the time police arrived, they found the victim alone.

"No matter the weapon, it just keeps happening. It just keeps coming, no matter what," said Pastor Donovan Price of the victims' advocacy organization Solutions and Resources. "It's just time for prayer. It's time for a new hope."

No one was in custody Thursday night. Detectives were investigating the man's death as a homicide.
