Man Charged After Standoff Following Crash, Scuffle With State Trooper On Tri-State
(CBS) -- A 28-year-old Chicago man has been charged after police say he crashed his SUV on the Tri-State Tollway near Melrose Park, then allegedly fought with his wife and a police officer in rush hour traffic, before fleeing the scene and holing up in an elderly woman's home a few blocks away on Friday morning.
Police say Thomas Chico got into an accident in the southbound lanes of Interstate 294 near Grand Avenue at 7:30 a.m. and was outside the vehicle arguing with his wife when an Illinois State Trooper arrived.
Chico got into a scuffle with the trooper, then fled into a nearby subdivision in Franklin Park where officers observed him enter a home. Several of the home's residents fled, but an elderly woman remained inside being held against her will, police say. A negotiator was brought in and Chico was taken into custody without incident.
Chico has been charged with four counts of home invasion, five counts of aggravated unlawful restraint, one count of resisting arrest and one count of aggravated battery to a police officer. He appeared in court Saturday and was denied bond.
