CHICAGO (CBS) -- Light snow was expected to fall across the Chicago area Wednesday night into early Thursday, but for most of the region, accumulations likely will be only 1 to 2 inches.

Most of Wednesday should be sunny and dry, with a high around 33.

According to the National Weather Service, light snow was expected to start falling in the Rockford area after 6 p.m., and in the Chicago area after 9 p.m., and continue through the Thursday morning commute.

For most of the Chicago area, accumulations were expected to be around 1.5 inches, with a little more around Joliet and Ottawa, where totals could be closer to 2 inches.

Minor snow is possible again on Friday and Saturday, but next week's weather looks much better.

Sunday will see a high near 50 degrees, and then temperatures could reach the upper 50s on Monday, and the mid 60s on Tuesday.

That could be just a taste of a very mild spring, as the Climate Prediction Center expects March, April, and May will be milder than average overall.
