1 in custody after Wheeling shooting prompts large police response
Wheeling police said one person is in custody after a shooting prompted a large police response Thursday afternoon
The Wheeling police and fire departments reported a large police presence in the area of Capitol Drive around 1:30 p.m. Residents were advised to stay clear of the area.
At MainStay Suites Northbrook Wheeling on Capitol Drive, witnesses said a person came into the lobby around 11 a.m. saying they had been shot, which then prompted police response.
Wheeling police said just before 11:30 a.m. they were called to the MainStay Suites for a report of a man with a gun. When they arrived, they found a man in the lobby with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
Police secured the hotel and then, with assistance, were able to take the shooter into custody without incident. A firearm was also recovered.
The victim was taken to Glenbrook Hospital where his condition stabilized.
No other suspects are believed to be involved and there is no ongoing threat to the public, Wheeling police said. An investigation by Wheeling police is ongoing.
