Hollandsworth: Marmol In A 'Very Very Dangerous Spot'

CHICAGO (WSCR) A Cubs season that's been over for quite some time took an even more frustrating turn when Carlos Marmol gave up five runs in the ninth inning to blow a two-run lead on Thursday night.

It's just the latest case of Marmol's struggles, he's given up seven earned runs and blown two saves over his last 1.1 innings pitched.

"This is a very very dangerous spot that he's kind of in right now," former Cub and current analyst Todd Hollandsworth said on the Danny Mac Show when talking about Marmol. "He's lost velocity on his fastball. I mean, every hitter that comes in the [batter's] box right now is not even considering his fastball. They see it out of his hand, let it go. It's not going to be a strike, it's not going to be around the zone. So that basically makes him a one-pitch pitcher. And we're talking about an off-speed pitch."

Marmol has been dominant at times over his career as a closer and setup man. But the Dominican Republic native has also seen his ERA jump by a full run over the last 10 games.

"I firmly believe that it's time to consider other options until he can right the ship," Hollandsworth said. "And I think that's where this is at. I think that other guys on other teams have certainly been given shorter ropes with better stuff."
