CHICAGO (CBS) — Near-record heat surges back into the Chicago area Saturday, fueling a line of strong to severe thunderstorms expected during the evening hours. 

Following high temperatures in the middle 90s Saturday, close to the Jun. 22 record of 97 degrees, a line of strong to severe storms is expected to move through the area, bringing the threat of wind damage and an isolated tornado.


Milder, dry weather returns on Sunday with high temperatures close to 80 degrees.

Next week brings cooler lakeside weather on Monday, then heat and humidity on Tuesday. 

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to return Tuesday and Wednesday.

Saturday: Hot and humid. Evening storms are likely, some potentially severe. High: 95

Sunday: Partly cloudy, breezy, and cooler. High: 81

Monday: Partly cloudy with an isolated shower. High: 87, cooler near the lake
