Gottlieb: 'White Man' Comment Was 'A Joke That Fell Flat'

(WSCR) A night after the social media world exploded with criticism of Doug Gottlieb over a comment he made on CBS's coverage of the NCAA Tournament, the basketball analyst joined 670 The Score to discuss the situation.

Gottlieb came under fire when he said: "I don't know why you guys ask me, I'm just here to bring diversity to this set, give kind of the white man's perspective."

The rest of the set, consisting of Greg Gumbel, Greg Anthony, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley -- all of African-American descent -- nervously laughed off the comment.

"The Turner guys, they don't really rehearse and so it's just kind of impromptu and I just thought, you know maybe this is a good ice breaker to bust chops," Gottlieb told The Mully And Hanley Show on 670 The Score Friday morning. "It ends up being a joke that falls flat. I just don't know how anyone could be offended, but if I offended anybody, you know, I say hey, it's a dumb joke and you move on."

Shortly after the comment was made, Twitter exploded with criticism of Gottlieb. The analyst said he's never surprised by what happens on Twitter and he still considers it a useful tool.

"I just felt bad because it became kind of my first moment with those guys and it fell flat," Gottlieb said. "It had the opposite of the intended effect. The statement was honest. I guess it was just not a smart thing to say."
