Gary Man Killed When His Car Rear-Ends Tow Truck

LAKE STATION, Ind.(STMW) -- A Gary man died early Friday when the car he was driving crashed into the back of a tow truck stopped at a traffic light.

Travis Sanders, 29, of 836 Polk St., was pronounced dead shortly before 3 a.m. at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, a news release from the Lake County coroner's office said. He died from blunt force trauma to the head.

The driver of the flatbed truck, a 56-year-old Hobart resident, told Lake Station police he was stopped on Central Avenue waiting for the light at Grand Boulevard to change about 2 a.m. when a Chevrolet hit the rear of the truck.

The tow driver was not injured. He scored 0.0 percent on a blood alcohol test administered by Lake Station Police as part of their routine investigation.

Chief Kevin Garber said a final determination on the cause of the fatal crash will be made after the victim's toxicology report is complete.

Sanders had numerous prior arrests for drug possession and sale of illegal drugs.
