Gabriel: Emery Will Bring College Scouting Background To Bears
(WSCR) Phil Emery is a scout at heart and that's exactly why he has expressed the desire to continue scouting college players, even as the Bears new GM.
One NFL expert said it's not uncommon for a GM to spend the first part of the week in the office and the latter part on the road evaluating players.
"You need to be in the office Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday," Greg Gabriel of the National Football Post told The Mully and Hanley Show. "Then, a lot of guys will leave and hit a school Thursday and Friday and hit a game on Saturday. If your team is on the road, they're going to go to a game that's near where your team is playing so you can hook up with your team on Saturday night. I don't think it's unusual.
"Phil, because he is a scout by nature, he wants to see things first off and get a better feel than you get just from watching tape."

Gabriel said since Emery is a former scout for the Bears, that will ultimately help him communitcate with the area scouts.
"One advantage he has is that, while he's only worked one season with Lovie, he's worked with the scouting staff for a number of years from 1998-2004 with all the scouts they have in the building, at least on the college side," Gabriel said. "He's very familiar with the work they do. He knows he can rely on them. That's a very strong staff."
