Emanuel Vows To Cut City Managers, Save $34 Million

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Emanuel today said he will eliminate about 500 management positions to save taxpayers about $34 million.

The mayor says the cuts go farther than the ones he had promised in the past, as the city tries to cut into a $600 million budget deficit.

"I am eliminating 510 middle management and senior positions,'' said Emanuel. The mayor made a point to emphasize the difference between eliminating the jobs and leaving the position open but unfilled.

Currently, 300 of those jobs to be eliminated are currently vacant and aren't costing the taxpayers. The mayor made the announcement one week before he unveils his 2012 budget.
