Cubs Top Pick Bryant Likely To Push Signing To Deadline

(CBS) With the deadline to sign all draft picks approaching on July 15, the Cubs and third baseman Kris Bryant are still miles apart.

Bryant, who was selected by the Cubs with the No. 2 overall pick, is reportedly seeking more than the $6.7 million slot allotted for his draft position. This year's No. 1 overall pick, Mark Appel, signed with the Astros for $6.35 million, so the Cubs are looking for something less than that number.

Bryant, however, is represented by Scott Boras, who has been known to squeeze every last cent out of teams for his clients.

Bryant hit 31 home runs at the University of San Diego last season, good for first in the NCAA - 10 home runs more than anyone else in college baseball.

At this point, 26 of 33 first round picks have been signed.
