Cubs Fall Apart After Mateo Gives Rockies Lead

The Cubs and Rockies were back and forth Sunday, sitting at a 5-5 stalemate until Colorado broke free with four runs in the eighth inning.

Dexter Fowler hit a two-out, two-run double to ignite a four-run eighth inning and the Colorado Rockies went on to beat the Chicago Cubs 9-5 Sunday for their eighth victory in nine games.

With the score tied at 5, the Rockies sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth to break the game open. Ryan Spilborghs began the inning with an infield single off reliever Marcos Mateo (0-1) and Jose Lopez doubled, breaking out of an 0-for-18 skid. After Jose Morales and pinch-hitter Ty Wiggington each fanned, Fowler lashed a double to right center to give the Rockies the lead. Jonathan Herrera and Carlos Gonzalez, who had four hits on the day, followed with RBI singles.
