Winter weather advisory in effect for Chicago area, parts of Northwest Indiana

A winter weather advisory remained in effect Sunday morning as steady snow fell throughout the Chicago area and parts of Northwest Indiana.

The advisory will be in effect through 9 a.m. on Sunday for Cook, DuPage, Kane, McHenry, Kendall, Lake, Will, and Grundy counties in Illinois, and Lake County and Porter County, Indiana.

An additional advisory went into effect at 9 p.m. Saturday, and remained in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday, for La Salle and De Kalb Counties in Illinois.

The snow Sunday morning was blamed for a mess at O'Hare International Airport, where slick roads led to a crash near Terminal 2. A door was ripped off a sport-utility vehicle.

Inside the airport, 107 flights had been canceled as of 7 a.m., and delays averaged 22 minutes. Midway International Airport did not report any cancellations.

How much snow is expected

The steady snow from a passing weather system was expected to taper off after 9 a.m., but this does not mean snow will be over for all of the Chicago area.

Lake-effect bands are expected to form Sunday afternoon, and again after dark into the evening. These will be very isolated in nature with an additional coating to an inch possible.

As much as 2 to 5 inches of snow was expected from the weather system. Snowfalls in excess of 6 inches have already been reported, and roadways were slick early Sunday morning.

Some areas south of I-80 saw a wintry mix.

Highs on Sunday will remain in the upper 20s.
