Chicago Public Libraries To Be Open On Veterans Day

CHICAGO (CBS) -- While almost all government agencies and offices will be closed this Friday for Veterans Day, there is one exception.

As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, all Chicago Public Libraries will be open for business.

Library system director of marketing and press Ruth Lednicer says even though it is a holiday, the libraries will stay open.

"Both Columbus Day and Veterans Day are days in which Chicago Public Library has always been open, and partly because we know kids are out of school that day, so it's a great place for them to come on a day they're not in school," Lednicer said.

She said keeping the library open offers an option for parents who have to work when their children have the day off.

Whether the libraries will be able to stay open on such holidays in the future remains a question. As a cost-cutting move in his 2012 city budget proposal, Mayor Rahm Emanuel proposed cuts to the library budget, ,a href="">although some of that money has been restored after aldermen objected.

Some staff positions and library hours would be saved under the current plan. Hours would be cut on Mondays and Fridays when students are in school.
