Police investigating 2 separate shootings involving officers in Chicago
Police are investigating two shootings involving officers that took place on Wednesday night, just hours apart in Chicago.
The incidents took place on Chicago's South and West sides and both involved men wielding knives.
Off-duty suburban officer shoots man on South Side
Just after 9 p.m., Chicago police responded to a call in the 7300 block of S. Langley in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.
Broadview police said an off-duty Broadview police detective was in his garage when a man with a knife approached. Police said the detective shot the man in the leg and arm after a struggle.
The suspect ran off, but officers caught him still holding the knife. He was taken to the hospital.
The detective involved has been assigned to administrative duties for 30 days, while Chicago police investigate the shooting.
Officer shoots armed man on West Side
Around 11 p.m., officers spotted a person with a large knife in the 5200 block of W. Madison St. in the Austin neighborhood.
Police said the person started to advance toward people in the street, ignoring commands from officers to drop the weapon.
Police said the officer deployed multiple tasers, but the person continued moving toward them.
One officer opened fire, police said, hitting the armed person.
The armed person was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating and the officer who fired his gun will now be placed on administrative duties.
Former Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy – now police chief in Willow Springs – said being on high alert is something that becomes a lifestyle for police officers.
"The thing that's really troubling is that this is the job that we take on. This is the situations that we get into, and quite frankly, I've been involved in more than 100 gun arrests. And every one of those arrests is an armed confrontation with a criminal, and you don't know which one is going to turn into a shootout" "We live with that stress, we live with that understanding, but when we make those arrests, we have to make sure the people pay the price for it and go to jail"
