Driver shot during Brinks armored truck robbery on Chicago's Southwest Side

The driver of a Brinks armored truck was shot in Chicago on the Southwest Side Tuesday morning, officials said, during a robbery of the armored vehicle.

The FBI Chicago office said a Brinks truck was robbed Tuesday morning outside the Chase Bank at 4363 S. Archer Ave., at Kedzie Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood.

The call to police for the robbery came in just before 10 a.m.

Chicago police said the 49-year-olddriver was standing outside the business when a robber came up and fired shots. He was struck once in each thigh and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Police said the attacker fled in a silver vehicle, heading south on Troy Street and east on 44th Street. A neighbor said he saw the man believed to be the suspect throwing multiple bags into a silver car before getting into it and driving away.

Witnesses said the entire incident happened very fast.

No one is currently in custody. Crime scene tape closed off the area for hours as detectives searched for evidence.

Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the persons or persons responsible for the robbery. The group is asking anyone with information, video, or photographs related to the incident to come forward anonymously to share the information.

The reward offer is good for 60 days, the ground said. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling 1-800-535-STOP (7867) or online at CPDTip.com. Reference RD# JJ532081.
