4 People Shot In 2 Incidents Around Same Time On West Side; 1 Dead

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four people were shot late Wednesday afternoon in two separate incidents on the city's West Side, and one of them was killed.

In the first incident in the 3000 block of West Roosevelt Road near Whipple Street in Lawndale, a gray vehicle pulled up in front of Brothers 5 Food & Liquor at 4:22 p.m. and two people got out. Both suspects took out guns and fired shots at multiple people who were in front of the store, police said.

A 29-year-old man was shot throughout his body and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. A 22-year-old man was shot in the back and neck and was also taken to Mount Sinai in critical condition.

Initially, police believed four people were shot in that incident, but it turned out that a woman was killed and another man was wounded in a separate incident around the same time in the West Garfield Park neighborhood more than a mile away.

That incident happened around 4 p.m. in the 400 block of South Hamlin Boulevard. A 29-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were in a vehicle heading south on Independence Boulevard, which is across a parkway from Hamlin Boulevard at that point, when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up and someone inside took out a gun and shot at the victims' vehicle.

The man was shot in the right leg and was stabilized at Mount Sinai, while the woman was shot in the abdomen and left thigh and was pronounced dead at the same hospital.

The Cook County Medical Exmainer's office identified her as Catrice Ware, 21.

Area Four detectives were investigating both shootings.
