After Brawl, Student Spectators Banned From Football Games

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The football games at Rich Central and Rich South high schools will be missing a key element.

The student spectators.

In the wake of a brawl between students at both schools earlier this month, administrators at first made the decision to ban all fans--including adults--from the sophomore game at Rich Central and the freshman game at Rich South on Thursday afternoon and the varsity game, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Rich South.

Both Thursday games were scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

An automated call from Mark Hopman, assistant principal for athletics and activities at Rich South, went out to parents on Thursday, notifying them of the decision.

Then, a second call went out to parents later in the afternoon stating that adults--but not students--would be allowed to attend.

On Oct. 1, a brawl broke out at Rich South High School when students from Rich Central arrived after being evacuated from their school by a bomb threat.

The bomb scare at Rich Central in Olympia Fields happened about 1 p.m., and prompted school officials to close the building and bus all students to Rich South in Richton Park.

As the buses arrived at Rich South, someone inside that school pulled a fire alarm, emptying the building, police and school officials said.

While students from both schools were waiting outside, a large brawl broke out among numerous students, which resulted in injuries to several people and several arrests
