2 Shot In Dolton Near HS Basketball Game
DOLTON, Ill. (CBS) -- Police in south suburban Dolton seek the gunman who wounded two people in a drive-by attack Tuesday night -- one of them critically.
The gunman stepped from a black van at about 6:30 p.m. and opened fire on the group of young men, who were walking east on 152nd Street at Champlain Avenue. Police Chief John Franklin said the victims told him the gunman fired five to seven shots.
"They did run to the school as well," he said. "They said that's why they ran there, because they knew there was a contingent of police there and they knew they'd be safe."
Before the van pulled up, the victims told Franklin, there was no exchange of gang signs and no words spoken.
One victim, aged 20, was in good condition at St. Margaret Hospital, in Hammond, with a gunshot wound to his right side. Franklin said the other victim, a 17-year-old, was shot in the stomach and torso, was transferred from St. Margaret to Christ Hospital, in Oak Lawn.
Aside from the description of the vehicle, Franklin said neither the victims or the others who were with them got a good look at the gunman.
He said, aside from the fact the victims ran to Thornridge to report the shooting and seek help, there was no connection between the shooting and the game. He said none of those who were targeted had been at the game.
"We pretty much have the gym locked up once the game starts," Franklin said.
The Thornridge boys' varsity basketball team was playing sister school Thornwood.
