2 Girls Rescued From Lake, 3rd Missing
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two teen girls were rescued from Lake Michigan on Thursday evening, but divers continued looking for a third in the choppy waters off Loyola Park beach.
Emergency responders were called to Lake Michigan at Greenleaf Avenue shortly before 6 p.m. Three girls had been playing near the break wall when they ended up in the water.
Witnesses say they knew the girls needed help in the rough water. Two were pulled out, and one was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where she was in good to fair condition; the other lingered for awhile on the beach, awaiting word about her missing friend.
The father of the missing girl identified her as Lexie Adu, 15, an honor roll student. The family is from Ghana.
"Between the cold water and the waves, that's some dangerous conditions to be dealing with," Fire Department Dive Team Chief Ron Dorneker said.
Police divers took over the search late Thursday night as a U.S. Coast Guard chopper flew overhead.
Life guards were scheduled to be working the city's beaches Friday morning in anticipation of the Memorial Day Weekend, the traditional kickoff of summer.
