2 Dead, 15 Wounded In Weekend Violence

CHICAGO (STMW) -- One man was beaten to death at a CTA station, a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot and at least 15 other people were wounded in separate acts of violence across the city this weekend, according to records kept by the Sun-Times.

The first homicide occurred on the platform of the 43rd Street CTA Green Line station Saturday morning, police said.

Sanchez Mixon, 37, was mortally wounded during a fight with another man on the train platform about 11:30 a.m., police said. He died less than an hour later, authorities said. No arrests were made.

The same day, 16-year-old Arrell Monogan died after he was shot in the back and shoulder in the 2400 block of West 58th Street about 7 p.m. on the South Side.

Monogan, of the 7900 block of South Escanaba Avenue, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he died at 8:23 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

No arrests have been made as police continued to investigate.

At least 15 other people were injured in separate incidents across the city, according to a tabulation of weekend violence.

The most recent shooting occurred about 11:30 p.m. in the North Center neighborhood.

Two male teenagers, ages 17 and 18, were in a Dodge Neon in 2400 block of West Irving Park Road when another vehicle pulled up and at least one gunman inside opened fire about 11:33 p.m., police said.

A bullet struck the 18-year-old in the head. The 17-year-old was shot in the shoulder, police said. Both are listed in "stable" but serious condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to authorities. No one was arrested as Area North detectives continued to investigate early Monday.

Earlier Sunday five people were wounded in three separate shootings that happened on the West Side in the span of one hour.

In the Lawndale neighborhood, about 5 p.m., two people were shot in the 1600 block of South Millard Avenue. One was shot in the foot, the other in the leg, police said. Both were in good condition at an area hospital.

Forty minutes earlier, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the head in the 2800 block of South Spaulding Avenue in the same neighborhood. The teen was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

Fifteen minutes before that, about 4:05 p.m., two men were shot in the 600 block of South Sacramento Avenue in the adjacent Garfield Park neighborhood.

One of the victims, a 22-year-old man, was shot in the shoulder and showed up at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was in serious condition, police said. The other victim, thought to be in his 30s, was shot in the neck and is in critical condition.

The spate of three shootings all occurred within about a two-mile radius of each other.

On Saturday night, a sergeant for the Metra police department was stabbed when he tried to break up a fight between at least two people at Union Station McDonald's restaurant at 500 W. Jackson Blvd., officials said.

The fight broke out just before 7 p.m. and when the sergeant tried to intervene he was stabbed three times in the leg, said Metra spokesman Tom Miller.

The sergeant, whose injuries are not life-threatening, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment. "He seems to be doing OK," Miller said.

Caleb Pescetto, 22, of Bartlett, was charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer and ordered held on $350,000 bond Sunday for the attack.

The police officer wasn't the only person wounded in a weekend stabbing.

Two men in the Englewood neighborhood were stabbed early Sunday in the 7000 block of South Racine Avenue, police said. Details about the attack were not immediately available, but both men were listed in "stable" condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

Two of Saturday's shooting victims were wounded in separate robberies on the South and West sides, police said. No one was in custody for either shooting,

One of the robbery victims, a 27-year-old man, was shot in the 4700 block of South Rockwell Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood just after 9 p.m., police said. The man was listed in good condition.

The other victim, a 22-year-old man, was in the Austin neighborhood when he was shot in the hand during a robbery in the 5000 block of West Chicago Avenue about 2:30 p.m. He was also listed in good condition.

One report of gun violence Friday was later discovered to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

A 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the groin claimed he was shot in the by two men who climbed out of a dark-colored van and opened fire about 7:20 p.m., police said.

At the time, the boy alleged he was riding around in a vehicle with several female acquaintances in the 3300 block of North Harlem Avenue when the men opened fire, police said.

But he later recanted his story, admitting that he was holding a gun that accidentally discharged as he rode around with the females, police said.

The boy's condition was listed as "stable" at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to police.
