Trans people are more likely to live in temporary housing — hotels, rooms for rent or staying with friends and family — situations which can quickly decline to homelessness.
One in five transgender individuals have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives, according to the National Center for Transgender Equality. Now a nonprofit based in Memphis is on a mission to reverse the troubling statistic. More than 75 bills have been introduced by legislators that target transgender youth. Advocates warn the bills are a "terrifying reinforcement of the most damaging messages that...they don't belong."
Arkansas just passed a controversial law that criminalizes gender-affirming medical treatment for trans youth.
Activist and cultural organizer Raquel Willis joined CBSN to discuss Arkansas' controversial new law making it illegal to provide gender-affirming medical care to transgender youth.
The updated policies come on Trans Day of Visibility.
