Restoring Power To Worcester Could Take Days

WORCESTER (CBS) - More than 20,000 people are still in the dark in Worcester alone following that deadly Fall Nor'easter.

Now utility companies like National Grid are telling homeowners power won't be fully restored until Thursday or even Friday.

"We're not living here right now. I'm trying to connect the power so we can heat up the house a little bit," says Gregory Diomko whose entire neighborhood is still in the dark.

WBZ-TV's Diana Perez reports

He just got borrowed a generator so while his home has some power, it's still cold. For now his wife and six-year-old are staying with relatives until the power comes back. Diomko says there's not much they can do without it, "everything here is electricity even the hot water, heater, stove."

Diomko's neighbor Mac McLaughlin is using a more traditional way to stay warm and lit. "The battery operated candles work well," she says.

Most of the other homes in the complex are completely dark and empty. McLaughlin says it's the only way most of the people who live here can survive the nights without power. "This particular neighborhood has some elderly. But many of them have family in the area and they are staying with them."

The vast number of customers still in the dark is keeping National Grid crews busy says Supervisor Mark Parker.

CHECK:  ESTIMATED RESTORATION TIMES

Parker says, "We have crews working through the night on a rotating shift so there are always crews on duty trying to restore the power as soon as possible."
