Cheryl Gavazzi of Beverly knows what she would do and she proved it.

She was shopping at the Marshalls in Swampscott on Tuesday when a Vera Bradley bag caught her eye.

It was hanging on a rack and she was thinking of buying it.

"I said that would be the perfect bag to put stuff in and (I) undid the zipper and at that point that's when I went - ok what do I do now?" she told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Friday.

When she looked inside, Gavazzi found diapers, some medical records, and a large rolled up wad of cash.

There was more than $11,000 there.

Gavazzi didn't hesitate, she took the purse to Beverly police.

They found the rightful owners, who had just reported the bag stolen.

The cash was money raised to build a church in their native Guatemala.

Gavazzi met one of the owners Wednesday. He gave her a big hug and a small reward for her honesty.

"He was wondering how he was going to come up with that money because it wasn't his money.  At that point, he was going to be selling his car if he had to," Gavazzi said.
