Van Hollen, Edwards Continue To Seesaw In Race For U.S. Senate

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- The hotly contested U.S. Senate race takes another turn. Democratic candidates Chris Van Hollen and Donna Edwards continue to seesaw in the polls.

A poll released Wednesday has Chris Van Hollen ahead of Donna Edwards by six points -- 44 percent to 38 percent. Recent polls have had Edwards on top.

Political reporter Pat Warren looks at a new "get tough" approach from the candidates.

The candidates have consistently been running in a dead heat. Now each of them is digging in -- to the point that even the White House got involved.

Putting the president in a Donna Edwards ad rankled the White House. A political action committee painting Chris Van Hollen as anti-gun control has since removed the president, but Van Hollen calls the ad a new low.

"When the White House says it's misleading voters, that is a very serious charge," Rep. Van Hollen said.

"My opponent has a record of caving to the special interests," said Rep. Edwards.

Van Hollen's ad claims Edwards has no record to run on; Edwards, that Van Hollen's record is questionable.

Who would you choose? Eighteen percent of voters are still undecided.

Even among those who have decided, a significant percentage say they could be changing their minds. They can start voting statewide on Thursday.

In the Republican race, Delegate Kathy Szeliga is ahead--with 20 percent of the vote--but 57 percent of Republicans polled say they're undecided.
