Large tree falls onto MTA bus in Reisterstown, 4 people treated for injuries

A large tree fell onto a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus Friday morning in Reisterstown, injuring four people.

Fire and rescue crews were dispatched at around 8 a.m. to the 300 block of Main Street, fire officials said in a post on Facebook.  

A LocalLink 87-line bus was traveling northbound on Main Street when it was hit by a falling tree branch, the MTA said in a statement.

The branch crushed the front portion of the bus's roof and shattered the door and windshield. The impact also knocked down a nearby bus sign, leaving a gaping hole in the ground, and scattered debris in the roadway. 

"It kind of took me by surprise," said one woman who lives in the neighborhood. "So when I got home, I wanted to walk down to see what was actually going on, because I was concerned about if there were people on the bus that were injured and everything."

At last count, four people were taken to local hospitals, including one with non-life-threatening injuries and three with minor injuries.

"I talked to somebody who works at the eye care center down the street, and she was telling me that she came out to assist, because there were a couple kids on the bus and everything, and somebody had a cut above their eye," the neighbor said, adding, "I know the injuries could've been a lot worse than what it was, so I'm just thankful no one was seriously injured."

The bus has since been removed from the scene, and the roadway has reopened.
