Security Guard Recovering After Being Shot On The Job

LAUREL, Md. (WJZ) -- A security guard is recovering after being shot while on the job.

Jessica Kartalija reports the guard was working inside a grocery store when he was hit.

Police in Prince George's County were called to a popular grocery store in Laurel for reports of a shooting. At 8 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 12600-block of Laurel Bowie Road. Police say two armed masked men entered the store. During a confrontation, a suspect took the security guard's weapon. It's unclear whether he was shot with his own gun.

That security guard, an adult male, was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The shooting comes as people are doing their Christmas shopping. Shoppers tell WJZ the incident is scary and disappointing.

"It is shocking. You can't be sure you can just go into a store and get what you need without being hurt," said one shopper.

"I mean, it was surprising to me. I come here a lot and it seems pretty safe. The area seems decent," said shopper Eric Jenkins.

"We were shocked to hear about it. This is the store we shop at all the time," said one shopper.

Now they're reviewing security camera footage and hoping to gather more information about the suspects.

"We can find that the person may have extraordinary clothing, extraordinary features which will make them easier to be seen or that someone may recognize that person from that video footage that was taken," said Cpl. Maria McKinney.

Police say the suspects took off in a light blue SUV. They are believed to be approximately 5'9". If you have information, please call police.

Police say there were a dozen shoppers inside the store at the time of the shooting. No one else was injured.
