Funeral Held For 10-Year-Old Rape, Murder Victim
PORT DEPOSIT, Md. (WJZ) -- Heartbreak in Cecil County where friends and family said their final goodbyes to a murdered 10-year-old girl.
Derek Valcourt has more on the funeral for the girl found dead just one week ago.
It is a day the family of Kami Ring never imagined as they laid to rest their murdered little angel.
In Cecil County, dozens and dozens of mourners came to comfort each other and pay tribute to the little angel who touched so many lives.
"She loved life, she loved singing, she loved school. She was a blessing in everyone's heart. We were blessed to have her in our lives for the short period of time we did and we got robbed of that," said her godmother, Katrina Clark.
Ring disappeared last Sunday night while she was staying at the home of a couple who had become like grandparents to her. Police point the blame at that couple's adult son who also lived at the home, Richard Madden---now accused of raping and murdering the little girl, then leaving her body in a field just feet from the home.
The news has shocked the small community.
"It's horrific," said Kathy Jamison.
"If anybody's got a heart, it touches them," said Lynne Usilton.
In fact, it's touched the community so much local businesses, including flower shops and the funeral home, all donated their services. The Boys and Girls Club of Cecil County, where Kami was a member, helped coordinate the effort.
"It's just devastating to see a young child like this who was so ambitious, bright, talented," said Mary Jo Jablonski, Boys and Girls Club of Cecil County.
Friends and family are now calling for justice as they grieve for Kami.
"We are all devastated. The kids are devastated---the elementary school kids, the teachers, everyone has poured out their hearts to the family and Kami. I just wanted to tell everyone thank you very much," Clark said.
Ring's accused killer remains locked up in jail on charges of murder and rape. He faces the possibility of life in prison without parole.
Donations and gifts on Kami Ring's behalf are being put into a scholarship fund in her name so that children can attend the Boys and Girls Club of Cecil County.
