Police Untangling Aftermath Of Mass Shooting In Southwest Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Police are still untangling the aftermath of a mass shooting that left one man dead and five others wounded in Southwest Baltimore.
Alex DeMetrick reports police think they have some real leads in the case, but the information is not coming from the victims.
The best eyewitnesses in this case are the five men that survived that shooting, but apparently they aren't talking.
Police and medic units poured into the 500-block of Denison Street Thursday, after six men sitting on the front porch were gunned down.
Five of those victims were taken to the hospital and one went to the morgue.
Detectives say most of the victims are known to police.
"Mostly complaints about drinking and drugs. In terms of what we know about that house and frame out in terms of what we know about victims is to say this looks like a very targeted, specific act aimed at these men on that porch," said Baltimore Police Commissioner Fred Bealefeld.
According to a police department spokesman, the people shot are not telling why they were targeted, even though they may know their attacker.
"We believe that this whole dispute is drug related," said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. "It's disgusting that individuals like this would settle a dispute and result in six people being shot."
Two of the victims are out of the hospital. Police are a clear presence at the house in a neighborhood still coming to grips with the attack.
"Like I said I was just on my way home and just heard shots. That's all I know," said Prentice Murphy, neighbor.
Police say calls have been coming in with information and police continue to knock on doors looking for more.
They have physical evidence, although it's not known if there are any eyewitnesses other than the victims.
"We've got some good intelligence, some things to look for, some people to look for," Guglielmi said. "What we need to do now is build on that. We need to talk to people in the neighborhood. If they've seen or heard anything, we're really pleading with them to contact police."
Surveillance video is also being processed.
"So far we've not had great success. So we will comb through every piece of it. We will look at every possible angle or bit of help we are able to get," Bealefeld said.
If the attack was to settle a score, police are hoping to make arrests before someone else picks up a gun to retaliate.
Investigators say the shooting is not related to gang activity. It's believed information being collected by detectives is pointing toward a motive.
For now, no one has been arrested.
The victims in the shooting range from ages 28 to 72. Two of those men were last listed in critical condition.
