Police Search For Missing Mother And Baby From N.Y.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A young woman and her infant son are missing, and police are asking for help finding them.

Suzanne Collins spoke with a relative about their strange disappearance in East Baltimore on Tuesday.

"She left his Pampers, milk, the baby bag and the car seat is downstairs. She didn't take anything," said Ellena Byrd, cousin.

Two weeks ago, Stephanie Jones, 21, moved from New York to her cousin's East Baltimore home with her 4-month-old baby. Now she's disappeared without a trace.

"She was happy, she's not on drugs, she's not on medicine.  She had some job interviews lined up and she enrolled in school, so I don't see any reason for her to just leave," said Byrd.

Jones had just applied for benefits for Women, Infants and Children in Highlandtown. Police say a witness saw her leaving with a man and a woman; the man had dreadlocks.

Police want help from the public.  There is great concern about the infant's welfare. He needs a special kind of formula and there are worries that the young mother might be a victim.

"We're looking into the background to see if there were any emotional issues, family disputes that led to a disappearance.  This could be as simple as she just went back home," said Anthony Gugliemi, Baltimore City Police.

Byrd said the baby's father has not been actively involved with the child and lives in Georgia.

"As far as I know, she doesn't know any people here and we have no family here, so I don't know who these people are or where she met them or why she would leave with them," said Byrd.

Jones hasn't posted on Facebook since Monday and her cousin said all her friends have no clue to her whereabouts.

"I think she made a bad decision by leaving with these people, but I don't think she would have stayed with them.  I think definitely something has happened to her," said Byrd.

Police continue to search for clues.
