18 Shootings, 6 Dead In Weekend Violence

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--Baltimore City police are working around the clock as they investigate more than a dozen shootings Memorial Day Weekend.

Amy Yensi has the latest.

Baltimore Police say they responded to six shootings Friday night and seven Saturday-- leaving as many as five dead.

Officers responded to a shooting just before midnight Saturday in the 1700 block of Normal Avenue and found a 27-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

The crime surge continued by night fall on Sunday leaving 18 people shot and six people dead.

  • Police say the first shooting occurred around 11:31 a.m. Sunday in the 800 block of W. Lexington Street. Police responded to a city hospital for report of a walk-in shooting victim and saw a man being treated for a gunshot wound to his arm.

"It was pretty much, bang, bang, bang bang. And then boom and then police came and told us we had to leave. It was a mess down here," said Dwayne Mackey.

  • At 12:51 p.m., a second shooting incident occurred in the 900 block of Ducatel Street. Police found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen. He was transported to a local hospital where police say he later died
  • Late Sunday afternoon, city police responded to a third shooting in which two victims were shot. Police say shots fired in the 2300 block of E. Preston Street where officers found one victim shot in the arm, another in the head. Police say both victims were transported; their condition is not known.
  • Late Sunday afternoon, city police responded to a fourth shooting in which two victims were shot. Police say shots fired in the 2300 block of E. Preston Street where officers found one victim shot in the arm, another in the head. Police say both victims were transported; their condition is not known.
  • Just after 8:00 p.m. Sunday, police say they responded to their fifth shooting  in 2100 block of Hollins Street for a double shooting.  At the scene, police say a man suffered a gunshot wound to the back and a woman suffered a gunshot wound to her thigh. Both victims were transported, their condition is unknown.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says, "It is disheartening, especially when we think about the progress that we've made. We've come too far to have this type of setback."

Police have yet to name suspects or motives in any of the shootings.

"Law enforcement public safety and the community will persevere over this small number of bad guys carrying guns, pulling triggers, killing people in our community," Deputy Commissioner Kevin Davis.

Aside from the 6 people confirmed dead, the identities and condition of the remaining victims is still unknown at this time.
