Police Chief Jumps Into River To Rescue Suicidal Man

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A police chief and two other officers leaped fully clothed into a river in Salisbury, Maryland, and rescued a suicidal man.

Capt. Rich Kaiser, spokesman for the Salisbury Police Department, says a man called 911 Wednesday and said he was going to jump off a bridge into the Wicomico River to kill himself.

Kaiser says Chief Barbara Duncan was in the area and heard the 911 call. She and other officers found the 28-year-old man standing on the bridge. The officers talked with the man, but he jumped off the bridge, which Kaiser says was about four feet above water. The river is eight to 10 feet deep.

When man began to struggle, Duncan, Cpl. Troy Underwood and Officer Darryl Myers jumped in and pulled him to safety.
